I’ve paid my money and I’m starting the course. We pushed it back a couple of weeks to Nov 21-23 to accommodate Marty, who is out of town next weekend. This will give us some more time to study. I have a copy of the instructor candidate workbook, which is a 3 ring binder with about 1 1/4″ of double-sided text, including article reprints, sample tests, knowledge reviews, and other materials. At first glance it seems a little disorganized, and not what I’m used to seeing from PADI. I expect it will all make sense at some point though. PADI is also rewriting their instructor materials, so there will be updates next year, I expect.

There are 4 other publications that are required to complete the knowledge reviews in the instructor candidate workbook. These are:

  1. The PADI Instructor Manual
  2. The Business of Diving book
  3. The Law and the Diving Professional Book
  4. The Best of the Undersea Journal

The Undersea Journal is a publication you get when you’re a PADI member (which starts when you become a Divemaster). It is a mix of dive safety, travel, and marketing information.

The other thing you get in the workbook is a holographic sticker that proves you paid for it (rather than just running of a photocopy of the loose leaf pages). This is attached to the Instructor Certificate of Completion and is required for PADI to process the paperwork and give you your instructor card.

As I mentioned before – I have no intention of changing careers to be an instructor. However, do a little on the side will keep me out there diving, and provide a diversion from my office job,
