So I’ve been reading the PADI Instructor Manual, General Standards and Procedures and noticed that the requirements for teaching technical diving aren’t all that onerous. There’s a good chance I can make it through instructor training by early next summer, then need to certify 25 divers (sounds a little like pyramid marketing), including 10 for the Deep Diver or Enriched Air Specialties (although right now I’m reading a 2006 manual, when Enriched Air required two dives, now it doesn’t require any), and assist on 2 courses. There is also a skills assessment by another instructor (not instructor trainer), and a requirement to make 25 dives to more than 130 feet with staged decompression. I’ve done maybe 7 or 8 of these so far, so a bit to do there. A minimum of 270 logged dives is also required, but I’ll be there pretty soon, as I’ve got more than 240 right now.

I think the way to do this is to take my Trimix certification in late summer 2009. Some of the guys are trying to put together a trip to Truk Lagoon next November, so it would be great to have that certification by then. So the training and the trip will help me get those deep dives I need. The jump from Tec Deep to Trimix Instructor isn’t that bad either, so it looks like I’ve got lots to accomplish over the next couple of years.

Sounds like fun to me. It will be interesting to see if at that point I feel qualified to teach it. Fortunately, with the strong group of divemasters and instructors around me, I think I’ve got a great chance of success.
